Hi everyone!
I would like to know in which plugins categories are you still relying in commercial products because you feel that the freeware offers didn't catch up.
I begin first!
- Reverb
- Sampler
- Sample libraries/Sample based VSTi
In the rest of categories I am mostly relying in freeware products.

Shameless self-promotion, try the hall plugin from Dragonfly Reverb. It has received very positive feedback from musicians making a wide variety of different styles. If that doesn't do it for you, the products from Valhalla are very good and not expensive for what you get.

Five years ago I would have said reverb, but nowadays there are plenty of great options. Michael's Dragonfly Reverb sounds glorious. Then there's Oril River, Sanford Reverb, and and NI's Raum was a great (though time-limited) freebie as well. Synths, EQs, compressors, saturation plugins, etc... there's more stuff than you can shake a stick at.

As evident from my Imperium album, free orchestral samples can also get you a long way. The only thing I would say is missing is a full-featured sampler à la Kontakt. Yes, there's TX16Wx of course, but the free version has some crucial features disabled IIRC.

There's also no really good delay in the free realm, unless something has popped up in recent months that I've missed. I mainly use Replika so I haven't exactly been looking for alternatives.

Seriously? And, if I can ask, which samples/sample libraries did you use for Imperium?

As far as I can tell, there are no free choral/vocal samples that are at all usable. I keep looking hoping something will appear, but nothing yet.

If you mean phrase/syllable choirs then no, nothing. For basic aah/ooh stuff there's a few decent alternatives.

See, I saw that you replied when I loaded up Scoring Central, and I was thinking to myself "This time he can't promote VSCO2! A choir is the one thing besides a contrabassoon that it doesn't have!" XD
