Which is often easier said than done, but when I'm browsing through presets for a certain part something will sooner or later jump out and make me go "yes, that's it!".
I agree. When I first started out, I anticipated much more synth in my music; but as time went by I became so wrapped up in all the textural possibilities of the orchestra that I really haven't done any mixing of the two. I find that the more practice and knowledge I acquire the more styles start to separate for me. I'm really liking the blend of synth and orchestra in these tracks, and I like the idea of throwing "realism" out the door in this context, too. It has that sort of power and "in your face!" sound you get from trailer music, but still with a musical heart that makes it memorable.
