Thank you! I mostly write with Sonuscore's The Orchestra (which is a really nice library for a beginner, reasonably priced as well) but I also use Paul Battersby's free Virtual Playing Orchestra and some of AIR's plugins that go for 1$ every now and then.

When I purchased the Sonivox bundle I was happy with all the sounds I got, and it surely got me composing. For the price you will be paying you may not regret it. However, the lack of a multitimbral instance is a hassle for big orchestral projects.

Have you checked EDIROL's Orchestral VST? I think it is abandonware now and you can find it easily online.


If they decide to re-release the original series as a Kontakt instrument it might even be a bargain for $99.

I hadn't heard of the EDIROL VST before, so I'm might try that at some point. It is fully legal, right?

I still haven't been able to try the SONiVOX strings trial yet, as my internet connection isn't very good, and the library is very big. The audio demos on their site aren't really that great, though.

I really wish there were more orchestral libraries for under $100. Are there any other old orchestrals libs that are now fairly cheap?

I don't have the SONiVOX brass or woodwinds but I do have the strings. I got them cheap ($1 I think) back when I knew nothing about VO (I only know a little now). They got me started quite nicely and I didn't notice issues with them until much later. In fact, I still use them a lot. So if you're looking for something cheap to get you started, you can't really go wrong with that price.

As for getting other libraries below $100, I've got the Silver editions of EWQL Hollywood Brass and Woodwinds. Got them on sale for ~$70/each. I'm sure the Gold editions are deeper, but I've got everything I need in the Silver - for waaaay less money. I'd recommend checking that route out. The full orchestra is more than $100 even in sale, but I just bought the sections one at a time, as I was able. Maybe it's time for me to ditch SONiVOX and find Hollywood Strings on sale...

Unfortunately, EWQL Hollywood Silver is still a bit too pricey for me, and I seriously doubt it would run properly on my I3 laptop...

I see that Hollywood Strings Silver is currently on sale for $52 here, in case you're interested.

Well, I finally got a chance to try out Orchestral Companion Strings today, and they actually sound really nice! The violin espressivo patch in particular sounds very good. The lack of modwheel support for dynamics doesn't really bother me, since my MIDI keyboard doesn't even have a modwheel.

I still don't think it's worth the normal price of $99, but for $3.99, this library should be perfectly fine for my needs, and I will purchase it and the other OC libs before the sale ends.
