It is an odd thing that, I think, most folks, though certainly not all, now think in terms of instruments rather than samples. Though to be fair I tend to think in terms of classical, soundtrack and pop/rock rather than rap / edm. When I was first looking at this world it seemed to be as much sample pools as instruments. Often the question now is 'Where can I find a good piano vst' rather than 'Where can I find piano samples'. It would be interesting to know how many folks would use the samples 'raw'.
The musicians I know can handle the idea of a keyboard hooked up to the computer that plays like a piano or a standalone keyboard or drumkit that they can plug a new instrument into after all it already probably has lots of presets. Bt I doubt any of them actually know what a sample really is.
