Bienvenido, Sergio! If I'm not mistaken, you represent a new continent to this forum. So far, I think we have people from Europe, Asia, North America, and now South America. Now all we need are an Aussie and an African ... then we would have the world pretty much covered.

Hey all,

My name is Bálint, hailing from Hungary, and I'm excited to join this community.
I'm an engineer professionally, but I attended music theory and piano classes as a kid, and I've been playing the guitar and doodling around composing (mainly power metal and prog rock) for about a decade, becoming a fan of music theory in the process.
However, I'm quite the beginner when it comes to orchestration, and I'm very, very bad at mixing. I wish to improve and learn a lot of both of these.

As for music, I mainly like older, more melodic and harmonically more interesting video game and movie soundtracks, a few of my favourite composers are Miklós Rózsa, Basil Poledouris, Glenn Stafford, Jeremy Soule and Howard Shore. I also like some epic metal and some prog rock bands, my favourite band being Bal-Sagoth.

My goal is to learn the ins and outs of orchestration and producing orchestral music with sample libraries, and to score soundtracks for a few (community developed) video games.

I found this forum through Mattias' music which I'm a huge fan of, and the Battle for Wesnoth music forum.
I hope I'll be able to add something to the community as well (if anyone's interested in electric guitar techniques I believe I could help)

Hi Bálint, welcome to Scoring Central! Nice list of influences- a lot of my favorites on there too.

Yes, I'm currently digesting Mattias' great articles, in theory everything fits the picture so well, but when it comes to practice it all falls apart
The samples I've used for some time now are pre-positioned in the stereo space yet everything sounds so separate usually, even more so if I mix in some other samples. I guess I'll be practicing on some freeware samples, I'm actually quite excited about them.

Hi Bálint. I come from rock and guitar playing as well. Hope for some good discussions.

You can remedy that "separation" between your instruments by using a good reverb plugin to create a virtual "room" for your orchestra. Reverbs have been much discussed on this forum. Is anything panned to 100% left or right? I find it helps to avoid that usually, I pan to max 60% left or right. No extreme positions on the pan control.

Hey!

I was avoiding adding reverb on the samples I've used so far, because I've used a mix of the tree and ambient mics and I was afraid the sound was going to get too wet. I've used the samples' built in reverb to try to create some z axis depth, but this whole area is something I need to practice a lot.
