What do you hear?

I wanted to see if I could make it a little easier for other people to hear what it is I'm talking about, so I applied a filter to bring down the volume of everything below 5000 Hz:

The notes are played first with the SSO clarinets, and then with the VPO clarinets.  Can you hear all the high frequency buzz that's present in the second one but not the first?  That's what I'm talk about.

Yeah, I hear that, but it's just air in the tone to me. Maybe it was an exciter or something put on it.

Just so no one thinks I was trying to skew perception, the only reason I modified the file to remove the SSO samples was to keep it simple and avoid confusion over which samples were being tested and so the clarinet notes would stand on their own. Either be good by themselves or not.

By the way, I should mention that VPO is shaping up to be a really excellent library.  I especially like the brass, which is a big improvement over SSO.  And the more comprehensive set of articulations is really nice.

Thanks. We have Mattias Westlund to thank for the brass. They are taken from samples he published here back in the summer. When he did, I was glad to have velocity layers to play with for the brass instruments. Something I've wanted to have for a long time.
