Luminous Reverb - an algorithmic reverb in development

The name is still going to change 100 times, I'm sure. The original working title was Crystalline Reverb, but that one was taken.

Mattias, Russian candy is "tjinuski" or "kola" in Swedish. I picked it because it's a term that I and some of my audio-savvy friends sometimes use to describe a good sound. "That guitar amp is totally Russian candy!" for example.

Here's another demo, this time with Exploration by Mattias Westlund. Now the algorithm has vastly improved air absorption, so I took the opportunity to try out a huge concert hall -type sound.

Still too brittle sounding for a hall I'd say... sounds like the walls are tiled.

It sounds better than the "Garritan Ambiance" already, haha

It does have a bit of that "slappy school auditorium" sound to it rather than the smooth infinity of a professional concert hall. Not sure if that expressive usage of adjectives is of any use to you, but there it is.

(sort of sounds like someone with a camcorder at a school concert compared to a recording in a live concert hall)

Typically I attribute the weird sound of the last one to simply having the wet mix too loud compared to dry, but I feel like the reverb settings themselves are much to blame for the muddy lackluster sound.

(btw, Otto, I threw a bunch of dry tracks on the previous page in case you need more stuff to try- not sure if you saw it as it was an edit)

Thanks, Sam! These came in handy, as I did some work on the ERs and wanted to try smaller spaces anyway.

About that last demo... There actually was a bug that literally turned it into a plate! Walls generally don't flip the phase of reflected waves... Guess what plate edges do? Guess what I (accidentally) did in my code?

Isn't Garritan Ambience the same as the free Ambience plugin by Magnus Jonsson?

Just out of curiosity, can you post a wet version of what you've got that's about 50% less verb than what it is now?

It's sounding a bit "New Orleans Around the Cinderblock Corner" and I'm wondering what it would sound like with a little less on it...

There's now frequency modulation as well (in addition to amplitude modulation, which made it in early on), although you can't really hear it in action at smaller space sizes.

Nice!  Still has that "cinderblock" quality echo (which is perfect for this style of music, BTW), but more like it's at the far end of the hall rather than around the corner (this is what I'm fooling myself into hearing, anyway).

Samwise Gamversilius , I swear you ripped this piece straight outta "A River Runs Through It".  This is a compliment, as it's Mark Isham's masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned, and one of the top 5 soundtracks of all time...

The arrangement was done by a friend of mine who is a professional jazz trombonist, based on a basic arrangement I did from a 1926 piano/voice arrangement.

I also arranged another piece, "A Cup of 'Coffee, A Sandwich, and You" for brass that we recorded the same session as well-
