I've always found it difficult using dissonance in my music. Many times it's highly necessary though, like when writing dramatic/creepy/tension music, and every time I struggle to get it right. If there is such a thing as "right" when it comes to dissonance. What I have managed to figure out through trial and error over the years is that a little goes a long way -- just a single off note in a passage can effectively create a feeling of unrest and foreboding. But if you overdo it, the result will be plain weird rather than ominous.
So I'm wondering what your thoughts are on using dissonance? Are there even rules and standards for that type of thing?
