Yeah, that can indeed be tricky, and it varies a lot between different samplers as well. In Jeskola XS-1, which I used for WoR, it was fairly painless to set up. In TX16Wx on the other hand, it's nigh impossible using legato without getting a lot of plops and weird noises. I guess developers implement the feature differently.
Another trick that I often use for solo woodwinds when synth legato is not an option, is that I set up the pitch envelope so that the pitch rises slightly (just a few cents) during the release phase and then I put the midiPolyphony plugin on the instruments midi channel, set to Poly 1 and Retrigger (from memory, I don't have the plug in front of me ATM). This will create a nice little "chirp" between wider note transitions that you often hear in real wind instruments, and it helps believability ever so slightly. The effect needs to be very subtle though.
