I keep going back and forth on this. I like the idea of having a master template, but trying to make one often turns into a huge distraction from actually making music. Also, every time I work on something I find myself making all kinds of modifications, then wondering if I should update the template with those same modifications.
I've about decided that for projects with a small number of tracks it is easier to just start with an empty project, and for the bigger virtual orchestral pieces, just copy a previous project and delete all of the midi regions. That way I'm not spending all of the time to maintain the template.
