I just posed this question over at VI-control but wanted to ask it here as well.
I'm thinking of creating patches for my orchestra library that use key velocity for articulation selection. I'm getting tired of key switches and want something a little more automatic and natural.
I'm planning a 3 way split.
low velocity (sustain)
- samples with a slow attack (a slight crescendo to start each note)
mid velocity (normal)
- a "normally" played note with a faster attack but not as fast as staccato
high velocity (staccato / accent)
- a combination of staccato and sustain so that if played using short notes, the result is staccato. If the note is held, an accented sustained note is the result.
My question is, based on other sample libraries that use key velocity for articulation changes, at which MIDI velocity levels should I make the switch for each articulation?
Right now I'm thinking of using 0-63 (sustain), 64-94 (normal), 95-127 (staccato/accent) as the ranges. Early tests on a solo flute seem to be playable like that.
