Computer go booom! - bigcat1969 - 02-05-2019
Well the desktop no longer recognizes the boot drive. I think this is a motherboard problem. Any thoughts on motherboards? Intel v AMD. I have some kind of I7 quad core if memory serves. Should I get a newer AMD CPU as my tech buddy suggests? How long can you live on roman noodles and chicken nuggets? Will my Sims 4 characters miss me?
I'm off to fight depression by watching Big Bang Theory and reading PG Wodehouse with some possible classic Doctor Who thrown in. What does this say about me and should I seek professional therapy?

I'm curious. Why do you suspect the motherboard and not the hard drive?

A couple months ago, I was putting in a new power supply when there was a pop and a weird smell. All but two of the sata ports stopped working. We got a SSD that I hadn't used before working. Now it won't recognize any drives.

Well for better or worse I went AMD. A slight single core step down from my current I7 but more cores, faster memory, newer chip, fewer nm and watts... The motherboard alone for the intel was more than the cpu/motherboard for amd.

Nice! I've heard lots of good things about the Ryzen range and I'll probably get one myself when the time comes for an upgrade here. I've been on team AMD for 14 years now and they haven't let me down so far.
Considering that your old system went boom, is getting a motherboard called Tomahawk really a good idea?

Lol Mattias. The old motherboard slogan was something about enduring performance or something, so who knows... I just hope my amd motherboard/cpu and my new nvidia 1070 like each other! ;P
Hey Michael. I'm not really sure about the memory. Sometimes I sort of pay off my buddy for doing all my tech work by giving him left over functional stuff often for his parents' computers.

That's probably better, I just know that some people upgrade and then put the old stuff in a box. Best of luck on your new build!

Good point. I must admit to having old power supplies, antiquated motherboards and other things lying around the place... really should clean up as I'm not sure this 486/33 motherboard is going to be that useful in the future!

Whatever you do, don't throw old stuff away. There's a huge retrocomputing community out there and old PCs and PC parts are always in demand. Some stuff is even getting fairly valuable. Old PCs have always been considered trash which means the majority of such hardware has ended up being recycled over the decades, so make sure you're not sitting on a small gold mine before throwing anything out.
