None of them are really dry, but as to what ambience was used on them I have no idea. I don't have the project files anymore. The oldest ones most certainly do not use the M7 IR as that lib wasn't even around back then IIRC. RE: Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra additions - Mattias Westlund - 06-02-2016 I found out just yesterday that my web hosting plan includes unlimited bandwidth, so I might as well get my money's worth. I have uploaded all the experimental/deprecated/unfinished SSO samples here mattiaswestlund.net/samples, along with the original SSO 1.0 release. All in all 1.54GB of files. I'm releasing the unfinished samples under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license. I'm going to ask anyone reading this to NOT just start converting everything to different formats and releasing it (though of course I can't stop you if that's what you want to do). All of this is rough, alpha-quality material and IMO it would be better if we could weed out the really horrible stuff, make a list of the useful bits and focus on setting up a few quality patches. So yes, I'm encouraging you to download the samples and audition them, play around with them, compare them, and then post your findings here. Personally I lack objectivity in this matter so it's hard for me to tell what's good and what isn't. RE: Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra additions - bigcat1969 - 06-02-2016 Thank you. I'll wait until their is a more finished version of the collection before doing any releases with them. I don't have a great ear but I'll take a listen to them. For testing purposes only. Not for redistro or actual use in your multiplat albums. http://www.mediafire.com/download/aytxgs8enrb5qhd/sonatina_brass_quick_nkis.zip http://www.mediafire.com/download/30esok9yfgdn04h/sonatina_strings_quick_zips.zip I unzipped all the instruments given above into one directory and put these nkis in the root directory. These are just quick konversions for testing purposes only because I find testing in kontakt easier than messing with individual wave files and I can view things easier than in sforzando. Added in the strings. Thanks bigcat! Yes, converting for testing purposes is of course fine; I'm not fond of working with sfz files either so I understand. Will do. I'll go through all of them and compare them to the quality of the existing SSO samples, if my personal opinion of the quality of these "new" samples is of any value. RE: Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra additions - Samulis - 06-04-2016 (05-31-2016, 04:24 PM)Otto Halmén Wrote: Stereo panning (i.e. move the right channel away from hard right when panning a stereo track to the left and vice versa) seems to make perfect sense on paper. With an XY microphone setup, for example, isn't this pretty much what happens to the direct signal if you move an instrument section around the microphones? Depending on the room, the ambience would of course change in more complex ways. Stereo panning is a cool feature, and definitely possible in a Kontakt library (in fact, it's one of the major features of the library I've been developing the past few years, VSCO 2). It's important to remember that the most realistic result is combined usage of stereo panning (phase-based panning) and traditional panning (volume-based panning), with most of it being stereo panning and just a bit of volume-based panning. This is accurate to how we receive signals. Some individuals may even use some slight eq'ing, and very careful reverb level changes (the ear facing more away from the signal might have a wetter signal with loess lows than the closer one). For questions regarding feasibility of stuff in SFZ, you can refer to this original documentation: https://web.archive.org/web/20090319001048/http://cakewalk.com/DevXchange/sfz.asp There is a "Position" opcode under the amplifier (about 2/3rds down the page), that appears to work as a stereo pan. It's a float -100 to 100. The only issue is of course, this feature would not be easily accessible via a UI unless you know of a sfz player that has the 'position' parameter on the UI; users would need to manually pan the instrument by editing the amplifier in the sfz file, as far as I know. Additionally, if my memory serves me right, some of SSO is mono, which would not respond to Position, only Pan. If someone WERE to figure out the UI stuff, either all the mono instruments would need to be sent through a stereo convolution and 'baked' (to borrow a term from the 3D texturing world) to generate a faux stereo field or be thrown out. Mattias, once VSCO 2 is out, in just a few weeks, I will be more than happy to help with building sfz's and will also be willing to donate maybe 1-2000 samples from the VSCO 2 sample base (about 20,500 samples total). I will also see if my friend Simon Dalzell over at Ivy Audio is interested in any of this, he has done some fantastic freeware sample libraries before and might have some samples or time to do some recordings. Also, if anyone wants a copy of this for working on SSO additions/changes, let me know. No one has purchased it. Probably going to make it freeware soon anyway- http://vis.versilstudios.net/sfzconverter.html RE: Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra additions - bigcat1969 - 06-04-2016 Interesting stuff on the stereo panning in Kontakt, I'll have to see if I'm smart enough to play with that... Wow that is incredibly generous of you to donate samples from your library. I'm also impressed by your offering VSCO 2: Community Edition for free. I'll mention it on my blog when it comes out, maybe I can push a little traffic your way. Simon Dalzell is amazing, one awesome piano he did! I've been exploring the possibility of dynamic crossfading and true legato in sfz. So far I am led to believe that both are at least conceptually possible. While I don't have any true legato instruments, there are a number of phaselocked sustain patches in VSCO 2 that could be converted. The stereo panning in Kontakt is easy. There's a 'Stereo Modeller' insert effect in the InsertEffects you can link up to the UI or just control in the back-end. I originally started creating VSCO 2 AS a freeware library! It was only when it started growing into the gigabyte area that I started to consider commercial value. My hope is for VSCO 2: Community Edition to be an original, modern open framework for people to build on and modify to taste. Simon's been helping me with VSCO 2- the upright piano and organ are both his recording and cutting work, and super impressive! RE: Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra additions - bigcat1969 - 06-04-2016 My buddy DSmolken has actually been working on legato patches for his free cello with Sforzando and I'm supposed to be making a WIPs Kontakt version. I better get on that. Anyway I dunno if there is any value in you and he exchanging ideas. With VSCO 2: Community Edition, these new Sonatina patches, DSmolken reworking his cello and bass and my dropping little hints to both him and Simon about doing a violin and viola, we might end up with a pretty fair free orchestra!
