RE: A themed compilation album? - Samulis - 04-03-2017 Too bad his samples are really badly out of tune... that's why it is suuuper important to tune any instrument with more than one string per note before recording. Then the fact that he chose an XY pattern for his main mics (rather than much more common AB/spaced pair or Decca, a spaced-pair derivative, both of which give the instrument, which naturally has quite a wide spread, a realistic spread), and the "ambient" position is mono; only one velocity layer but 7 RR? That is the weirdest decision I have ever heard of, especially for such a dynamic instrument! These things explain why it's freeware, I guess. Here's my hammered dulcimer in action- there are a lot of great techniques and articulations that can be used. It isn't the most in tune, but you can hear it's much better than his samples. I will see if I can sample it this week. https://instaud.io/2HX https://instaud.io/2G6 https://instaud.io/2HV (plucked) https://instaud.io/2HS (diddles and muted) RE: A themed compilation album? - kmlandre - 04-03-2017 (04-03-2017, 04:32 AM)Samulis Wrote: Too bad his samples are really badly out of tune... that's why it is suuuper important to tune any instrument with more than one string per note before recording. Well of course they were out of tune! You weren't drunk enough while listening to them!!! I thought we had *CLEARLY* established this as a minimum earlier in the post!!! ;-) Actually, in specific instances, I really like the out-of-tune aspect of it. It might be fitting in the tavern theme and it fits well in an ensemble setting simply because it creates some "human error". That can lend a slightly more realistic feel to a quicker melody line, especially if there's some neighbor RR going on to make the out of tune notes appear less frequently. But, to be honest, I like the sound of your dulcimer better. It only required a single hard cider to get through... ;-) Looking forward to when you have that all finished up and ready for release! Consider this my official "can I beta for you? Huh? Please? Can I? Please please!" begging moment. -- Kurt RE: A themed compilation album? - Samulis - 04-03-2017 You're already on the official BETA test list, Kurt, you don't need to beg. I should make it clear- in case it wasn't- those were all live performances up there. I haven't gotten to sampling yet. some human error is great... being so out of tune it hurts to listen to on anything except laptop speakers whilst severely inhibited by alcohol is not. I learned that lesson some years ago and tried very hard not to repeat that mistake; even with goofy freebies like the pBuzz, we still had it tuned and the result is an instrument that is both bad AND playable, which is I think the best compliment one can give to a sampled pBuzz. Oh, I know. But the overall sound quality of your instrument was better to me. Maybe it was just the genius miking techniques you employed... Kurt RE: A themed compilation album? - Samulis - 04-04-2017 Sam's Genius Mic Technique © 2017 1. Put two Rode NT1-A's (~$250 vocal cardioid condenser mic) in spaced pair 2-10 feet from instrument depending on room and taste (or lack thereof). 2. Tell roommates to shut up for a hour (please). 3. Win Kurt's accolades. That's actually how I made VSCO 2 in a nutshell. #notalternativefacts |
