Sorry for my (semi) absence as of late, but you seem to be doing fine - Mattias Westlund - 03-06-2017

Being the guy who started all this I have this nagging feeling that I should maintain a steady forum presence and respond to almost every thread. But the latest weeks I just haven't had the time and energy. Partly because I'm working on a new project, and partly because my back's been acting up (I really need to get myself a better chair) so most of my time has been spent working on said project and the rest of it being away from the computer completely, because my back can only take so many hours of sitting down in one day.

That's why I'm so glad to see that the forum has taken on a life of its own. Thanks to everyone who's keeping the crickets away!

Don't know if it's practical given your setup, but if you don't already have one, you might look into getting an adjustable sit/stand desk. I find being able to change position frequently makes a big difference in keeping my back happier.

I've considered that myself but the cost of such desks is probably higher than my entire home studio setup... plus that it would need to reach some considerable height in order for me to be able to use it comfortably (I'm 199 cm). There were a couple of desks like that where I used to work a few years ago but they were all slightly too low, forcing me into some kind of half-hunched posture. Which, I think, in the long run is even worse than sitting down.

How do you feel about recording MIDI whilst standing up? Depends on the available space, of course, but I'd imagine a keyboard stand would be cheaper than a studio-sized adjustable desk. It's easier to jury-rig as well. I used to have a slanted keyboard stand set up from a small step ladder and some wire hooks.

Playing keys while standing up is not a problem. In fact, I slightly prefer it over sitting down. But then there's all that jumping back and forth on the timeline, switching between tracks, undoing, using hotkeys and doing other DAW stuff inbetween takes that requires me to have a mouse and keyboard handy at all times. A high keyboard stand doesn't really solve that. I might get more excercise though! Stand, sit, stand, sit, stand, sit... Wink
