Ok then, moving on - I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post, being such a noob that I am - how new is new enough at software orchestration to be a "noob" by your standards? I've got just about two years in now - that's still probably new enough, yeah? Or do I have to be like, a clean slate kind of noob, who has yet to write his first phrase?
In any case, hello everybody! I'm Sine, and I'm happy to have found this site, and of course the forum herein. I found this place pretty much exactly how Mattias describes it in the first part of his noobie faq post actually. I had a few things I was working on and there came a point where I realized the over all sound needed help. It was just thereafter I slipped and fell into the rabbit hole that is mixing. Holy crap I had no idea how much stuff was in front of me that needed learning just so I could get what Ive recorded to sound at least somewhat similar to the tune that had played in my head. This is something to which I'm sure you all relate to some degree.
I'm the type who prefers to learn as much as he can on his own without resorting to the help of others in any way. It satisfies like nothing else when somewhere down the road you find out that some particular technique you came up with on your own, just so happens to be what some reputable industry insider is showing people how to do nowadays. I dunno, it's just an example - that being said though, I'm not foolish enough to think I could learn everything and master it all on my own. Some things I find intuitive - before knowing all of Jack from Squat about mixing music, I still made sensible use of pan pots in my songs. To me, it just made sense that I should do so. Other things however, simply don't come as intuitively for me. Reverb, for example. I had looked into it - just a little - grabbed a couple tips and applied what I "learned" to a
couple pieces I was working on. Not to be overly dramatic but the end result was somewhat disastrous. I pretty much fubar'd those tracks lol. I had to accept the fact that I was going to need as much insight into mixing techniques as I could get, which led me here.
I have a tendency to be long-winded sometimes - too caught up in the telling of the tale. It's probably best I cut myself off here and say hello again and thanks for having me and I really look forward to interacting with you guys!..

I wouldn't be too concerned wether you should call yourself a noob or not. Just keep doing what you do, and feel free to ask for advice, feedback, or proof listening any time you feel like you need to.
As to orchestral reverb, I have a tiny tip: A good reverb should sound like you pull back the microphone from the instrument. I, for one, am still not 100% fluent in dialling reverbs, but trying to listen for that sonic cue has helped me a lot.

To be honest, I've been lurking around this forum for a few weeks now hehe. I had the feeling I wanted to join early on but thought I should familiarize myself somewhat with the conduct and content to be found here. I haven't read everything you guys have posted, but I think I made it through a good portion.
That being said, I'm aware of how active you are as a member, and to tell you the truth I was counting on you to be the first to say hello! Haha - you didn't let me down Otto, thank you!
Really my biggest concern in joining the site, was (is) that I'm not too sure if I have much to offer back. I'm happier if I'm able to contribute. Now, that's not to say that I have nothing for the group whatsoever lol. The better part of my life has seen me involved with music in one way or another, but yes I'm relatively new at this kind of composing. I just prefer you guys come to know me as a member, not so much a user, if you know what I mean.
Anyway... I do have some music I'd like to share - one piece in particular, even though I've already put it up on SoundCloud and whatnot, I'm still not satisfied with the mix. I'd love to get some members' feedback on that one for sure. I'll work on that and post it soon enough. Thanks again Otto - glad to make your acquaintance..

I believe I understand what you mean - 'pulling back the mic'. I'm gonna listen for that and I'll try to apply it, thanks!..

I know what you mean, but don't sweat it.
As Mattias Westlund said in the founding thread, "Scoring Central is a forum for all virtual orchestration enthusiasts". I too consider Scoring Central a down to earth place. Here, it's all about making the kind of music we love and helping each other with it if need be.

Yup, exactly like that. Lurkers are perfectly welcome, there's no requirement to give anything back in terms of tips or advice or whatever if you don't feel comfortable with it. OTOH, don't underestimate the power of a seemingly stupid question. You might feel like a complete numbnut posting it, but in turn it will help a) knowledgeable people look for the best way of explaining it, and b) spare thousands of other people the embarrassment of posting the question themselves. So any way you look at it, as long as you're posting, you're contributing!

Mattias your "ask a stupid question" proposal is a pretty clever way to think about it. That's good stuff - and I totally agree with your conclusion on its potential benefits. When I've seen the chance for it before, I've assumed whatever roll i could fill if it was going to help the situation and the people involved in it, to find the resolution needed to move things forward. To put it simply, I'm the type of guy that actually *likes to help out, however I can. When I mentioned my concern about being able to help here, that's just my own silliness and trepidation is a defense mechanism against the internalized frustration I'll feel if it turns out I'm of no benefit whatsoever. But yeah, that's totally my own box of issues and not something you guys need to be burdened with lol! Plus, I'm probably being overly humble and selling myself short a bit here too. I'm sure I have much more to offer than I first let on. I just prefer to be useful in some way to someone at some point somewhere down the line is all..

I have to admit that the name SineEyed makes me think of sine waves in your eyes. Kind of like the idiom "dollar signs in your eyes", meaning somebody is motivated by money, except in this case you are motivated by those vintage synthesizers that were driven by sine-wave oscillators...
Anyway, before I get banned I'll bring it back on topic and say welcome to the forum, as you have discovered there is a friendly bunch here, very willing to help no matter what your experience level.

And no worries about staying on topic - I think I set a precedent for a... maybe a more casual vibe on this thread with those first few lines hehe. I can be serious when the occasion calls for it but, by nature I'm a light hearted guy. I'm open and I don't take myself too seriously so everyone should know that they can speak their mind confidently and comfortably without worrying I might flip out or something. In an ideal world I'd have no reason to give such a disclaimer, but as we all know, people on the internet can be pretty weird from time to time. I'm plenty weird myself - I'll be the first to admit it! But I'm a good kind of weird. I'm the makes babies laugh kind of weird - not the agro forum chat guy kind of weird..
As for my name well, that's just me trying to be clever. A bit of creative phoneticism - sometimes I like to embellish
I like where your head is at though with the sine wave in the eye thing! The name does actually have roots in electronics - I came up with it when I joined a circuit design and simulation community a few years back. And in fact, I had the same kind of idea as the image you talked about. I've sketched it out once or twice thinking it'd make for a good logo - unfortunately I'm even less talented at drawing as I am with composing!
Hmmm... I know that sketch is around here somewhere....
