I really like that theme, i can hear that Jeremy Soule Influence, while I think Pentatonic Strings always sound a bit like there from GW Factions (at least to me). What string samples did you use and what is the instrument playing later together with the harp? I like the contrapunctial use of the theme later on, but I think it would also work with a bit crazier harmony, while that might reduce the "folkish" feel, that it has right now.

A pentatonic scale is "instant Asia" same way as phrygian dominant is "instant Middle East", if you stay away from blues progressions and phrasing  The string samples are the same as in WoR; Roland layered with Digital Sound Factory [E-MU]. The harp is doubled with a hammered dulcimer.

Just wanted to mention that I was going to cancel my Distrokid subscription (i.e. the service I used for putting WoR up on Spotify, Amazon, iTunes, Google Play etc) as I haven't yet gotten a return on that $20 "investment", but then it all slipped my mind and Distrokid auto-renewed itself a few days ago. So the album will remain available from all major online music outlets for another year at least.
On December 16 though, WoR will go "pay what you want" on bandcamp.com!

You can get a FLAC format copy of WoR complete with pdf booklet and high-res album cover for free from my site until June 30th.
I've been listening to Waters off and on ever since I got it back in June and I like it the more I listen to it and I liked it a lot when I first got it. That fantastic main theme took a little while to worm its way into my head but now that it has it ain't going to leave. The sheer variety of instruments is magnificent - solo cellos, clarinets, synth-y stuff in "X: Catacombs", the various "ethnic" percussion, strings both bowed and plucked, and winds. And that lovely retro-sample feel! All I recognize is some old Roland/Edirol stuff. (I love the choir in "XV: The Journey Home" and other tracks.)
It's a wonderful, wonderful album. If I ever get around to my own story soundtrack/conceptual album/whatever you call it, I can only hope that it is half as good as Waters. EDIT: I swear I heard a hurdy-gurdy like drone in a couple tracks.

Yeah, I guess I did manage to squeeze a lot of different instruments into those paltry 2GB of RAM. The choir is Miroslav IIRC. As for the "hurdy-gurdy", it's a tamboura drone.

Thanks. Which theme are you referring to? There's quite a few recurring ones in there. My personal favorite is probably The Caravan theme, with the time signatures that count down.

XD Let's see... variations in "I: Overture" at :8-11, at 1:04-21, and the theme itself at 1:32-47, variation at 1:58-2:07 and 2:16-23. I've heard it in a fair few other tracks - a really beautiful statement of it in "VI: Slaver's Market." This is the theme that I've observed the most and which I have thus far remembered the best. I expect further listens will reveal better the other themes to me - it takes me a few listens before recurring themes start being observed and remembered, for whatever reason... |
