Some Brass Music

I had a little bit of free time this spring, so I write a series of brass quartets and quintets and had them recorded at the end. I went for a more traditional style, some more Classical, others more Romantic. "Quintet I" is the most modern of the four.

The intimacy here is absolutely wonderful. Truly naked and revealing, you can really hear each and every instrument and what they're doing.

Makes me realize that I know almost nothing about arranging for brass.

It's all just voice-leading and listening to a lot of brass band music and the like. I played in a few brass groups for a number of years through school as well. We'd always start with some Bach Chorales arranged for brass. Great material!

Well, this was a very one-time thing. A friend helped me assemble a few of his friends and we recorded them up in an empty classroom with a Zoom handheld recorder. I do play a little of most of the brass family myself, but not as well as these players. I doubt very much I could assemble this particular group as well, as many have graduated and/or moved.
