I used to be into space flight sim games ages ago. I played a lot of X-Wing vs. TIE Fighther, X-Wing Alliance, Privateer 2 and probably others as well. But as time passed I started realizing that these games were all very samey and, honestly, a little boring. You spend 90% of your time looking at starfields and planets, other ships are just blips on the HUD, and on top of that this genre has a tendency of being more sim than game if you know what I mean? Just learning all the keys and how to properly maneuver your craft feels like a chore rather than something you would do for entertainment (which I happen to think is what games are about, after all). So after a few years I completely lost interest.
I do return to the genre from time to time. I have a couple of the "X" games, which I've played briefly. I tried EVE Online after it went F2P. But all that these games managed to do was cement my opinion that space sims are, by and large, pretty much the same as they've always been. I just don't have the patience for that kind of hardcore thing anymore.
Anyhow. Today I picked up a Saitek Cyborg V1 joystick while thrifting and went looking for some kind of casual(ish) game that would let me relive my space-faring years so to speak without having to invest the same amount of time as getting a proper flight certificate. And I was disappointed. Rebel Galaxy is a cool game with it's rock soundtrack and Firefly-esque vibe (and for €5 it's a no-brainer) but as it has large-scale, naval-type space combat rather than dogfighting and doesn't even support using a joystick it's not what I'm REALLY looking for.
Other than that I haven't been able to turn up anything that fits the bill. Is there even such a thing as a more casual space game?
