Matthias: I think some of the old Tomb Raider titles (the really old ones) did the "emotional / character cue" thing quite well. Usually the music would swell when you achieved something , invoking this heroic adventurer kind of feel. I liked that. But these games also had a very strongly defined adventurer protagonist and epic locations such as Egyptian ruins. The moments where you completed a challenge and a rainbow appeared and the theme cut in, so to speak, were my favourites. It felt really rewarding.
I agree the typical battle music can get annoying quickly. Minimalism may be the key here. Cutting out the music repeatedly because there is some combat sounds pretty horrible and heavy handed.
Drones - my top example for drones used well is the Quake soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails. But it has to fit the game and be used in the right places. Otherwise drones can get overbearing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAgZ5XWX...sveL6SdilZ
Big location / character themes are usually rather encountered in film, I believe. Lord of the Rings is my example here. It may be that 90% of videogames simply don't lend themselves to this because they're mostly action and button pressing and don't really have very deep characters or awesome locations. As the story-heavy genre develops we might see more interesting music.
