I'm now beginning to think that my new "-EXP" expression patches are better labelled "-DXF" for dynamic cross fade and that I should have a single controller for volume and cross fade point as you suggested. The article suggests, as you did, that the controller should be mod wheel (CC#1).
It also appears that I've made a mistake with Virtual Playing Orchestra 1.x and should never have used CC#1 (mod wheel) to adjust the attack for the "normal-mod-wheel" samples and I should always have used CC#73 (attack).
