I'm now beginning to think that my new "-EXP" expression patches are better labelled "-DXF" for dynamic cross fade and that I should have a single controller for volume and cross fade point as you suggested. The article suggests, as you did, that the controller should be mod wheel (CC#1).

It also appears that I've made a mistake with Virtual Playing Orchestra 1.x and should never have used CC#1 (mod wheel) to adjust the attack for the "normal-mod-wheel" samples and I should always have used CC#73 (attack).

When not being lazy (aka now), I've been messing with xfade Kontakt patches. Fortunately the VSCO2 sustains work really well for this as they are something or other synced (Sam knows), however don't edit the starts (as someone I know once did) as it will unsync whatever is synced and mess up the xfade. The Iowa stuff sounds awful xfaded as it goes all phasy. Not sure about other samples. Definitely modwheel for that seems to be standard, though I also like patches where both the xfade and the volume are tied together using velocity as that works with basic midi files.

I don't think mod wheel really has a standard meaning anymore.  A very long time ago, it was consistently used to add vibrato, but these days it just seems to be whatever the sound designer figured was the thing they wanted to make it easiest for the performer to control, since it's one of the few controllers found on every keyboard.  Sometimes they'll use two controllers for the same function: the standard one (73 in this case) and also mod wheel.

I'll send you the download link in a private message. I already have a few days of work ahead of me based on feedback I've already received so if it takes you a few days before you can play with this, that's fine.

Note that the "-EXP" patches currently use CC#7 for volume and CC#11 for cross fade. I think the final release will have volume and cross fade combined into a single controller, although I haven't tried that yet. For now, just use both controllers at the same time to get a realistic sound.

I did some more thinking last night during my usually-scheduled insomnia session (i.e. 1-3 AM)- I remembered there's a method to reduce or disable velocity tracking somewhere in the SFZ 1.0 opcodes. Maybe try that in combination with crossfading and see what happens if you don't add any gain to the lower layer (I think that is part of the problem- we typically think we have to give a lot of gain on the lower layer).

I'll see if I can find the opcode in a bit...

... removes velocity tracking.  It can be set anywhere from -100 to 100. Negative numbers are weird. The higher the key velocity the lower the volume.

One concern I have about removing velocity sensitivity is that the only way to adjust velocity would be with a slider or the mod wheel. You would be forced to constantly move a slider or mod wheel while playing. It would take all expression away from the live performance of hitting the keys.
