Well, I've noticed that people's fingers tend to fall into the patterns they already know. It's very easy to jam something out, but I find that without even thinking about it my brain just tells me to do something similar to what I've already done a thousand times before and it all starts to sound the same.
Plus, if I want to really develop a small, unexpected portion of a motif, it's much easier to break it into surprising chunks if I can see it plopped out visually. My analytical brain makes connections and perceives different patterns than my audiological brain, so I find it easier to create fresh but related material quickly if I can just move stuff around like I would legos and tinker toys.
