I did it all in one ardour project, so it's one midi export. I just barely added the midi to the same dropbox folder before starting this response. It looks like the midi export didn't include tempo changes, which I'm not really happy about.
The channels are:
1: Violins
2: Flutes
3: Bassoon
4: Horns
5: Trombones
6: Celli (just pizzicato)
I got mixed results trying to import it into different applications. LMMS ordered the tracks by when they started playing, so the first track ended up being the celli, bassoon came next, and so on. MuseScore ordered them by channel, which is what I would prefer. Another approach we could take is exporting one midi file per track, so then we end up with something like violins.mid, flutes.mid, etc. Of course the trade off is that we would have to shuffle many more files around, but it would avoid any confusion about which track is which instrument.
Anyway, let me know how Reaper imports this.

I was thinking about organising it so that everyone gets to take turns starting a composition, as I suspect that's going to be a coveted task in a round-robin project. The way of splitting the work is still a bit up in the air. Splitting it time-wise (i.e. everyone gets to add something like 1-2 minutes to what's already there) would certainly provide for a cool way of presenting it in video form. Think a "This part by John Doe" -style subtitle and perhaps an author's avatar that changes throughout the video as the composition reaches the respective part of each participant.
I meant midi channels - Let's say we have a section of violins as well as a solo violin, and we want to give the solo violin narrow stereo width and more forward stage position. Wouldn't we need two midi channels (or tracks, I'm assuming one midi channel per track), one for the section and one for the solo? That way they're not processed by the same audio pipeline.
Honestly I don't have a preference of starting a composition over augmenting somebody else's... mostly I was just trying to get the momentum going with the sketches that I shared. In fact it might be easier for me to contribute to somebody else's; getting started is sometimes the hardest thing for me.
Also I was considering a more horizontal approach, allowing people to fill out harmonic parts, percussion, etc. where somebody else put in melody. We could still each "own" parts of the melody, even if we're at liberty to elaborate on parts that were written by others. It's an exercise in trust, letting somebody else touch and change your own artwork.
