A monitoring setup should be accurate and unflattering, letting you hear what's really there. The famous Yamaha NS-10 monitors are notorious for sounding unpleasant, and yet their accuracy led them to become a de-facto standard among mixing engineers.
I ended up buying an old used set for less that 100 USD (http://www.samsontech.com/samson/product...resolv50a/). After testing them, I can now tell what you mean. The samples come out a lot more harsh than I'm accustomed to, but after this discussion I realize that it's because the monitors are giving me a much more accurate sound than my consumer speakers were.
