The horns with the filter removed sound comparable to the original SSO samples, but without the ambience of the original SSO samples. The original SSO horns sound a little crisper to me. It's hard to say with is better / more realistic. I did notice that the FF Horns with the filter removed have a greater range than the original SSO. Original SSO Sustain patch goes to C5, the FF horns with filter removed go to an F5.

I like the horn rips. I'll probably try to use them next chance I get, just because they exist and they are interesting. The way they play now though, there is a regular note played, then the rip. Is that how a horn "rip" is normally played (I'll have to ask my dad what he thinks of the sound - he was a french horn player)

For the rip samples, I figure it would be more useful if the samples were just the rip, minus that first note. I realize it's probably pretty easy for me to remove the first part of each sample to get just the rip if I want.

I have seen examples of both in various libs, i.e. rips both with and without a leading note. Advanced Orchestra and Roland have just the rips, but Strezovs Four Horns freebie has a leading note. I figured it was better to have the leading note and if so desired remove it on a sampler level, i.e. move the sample start time ahead to where the rip begins.

I'm not entirely happy with the rips right now; listening to the above mentioned samples I realize that mine could use more of a glissando effect to sound more realistic. We'll see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not using SFZ for this. That would be a total nightmare. Obviously I could just render the horns as is and then add the filter (maybe that's what you mean?). But I really prefer doing this on a per-layer basis. That gives me more detailed control, as I don't want all sample layers to have the *exact* same filter frequency.

Have you given any more thought to this? Do we have your approval yet to share any of the samples? I'm creating my own orchestral library (to be shared for free when I'm done). I have my eye (ear?) on the following so far:

Thanks. I still have a lot of work to do, but it's progressing well. I've made my first pass through the Woodwinds. I've recently started on Strings, then Brass and Percussion next. Once I'm done, I'll have to compose an instrumental to demo the instruments and articulations. Then, I'll be ready to share and I'll let you know.

Using your SSO library as the gold standard, I'm working to create staccato, sustain and a general purpose (mod wheel adjustable) articulation for all sections and solo instruments, plus pizzicato for strings of course, by combining a few libraries into one. This will mostly be based on Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra (plus some of the patches you've recently shared), No Budget Orchestra and VSCO2 Community Edition.

I'm really excited about the idea of a new version of SSO. It's a fantastic library, and this looks like it will be a major upgrade.

While you're at it, I'd like to suggest a feature. Would it be possible to make the instruments respond to the expression controller? Currently they don't, which is inconvenient. And when you start having instruments with multiple layers it becomes even more important, since expression and volume no longer do the same thing.
