Strings for 60s-70s orchestra sound

Hey gang. I got this question on my blog. Any ideas?

I need strings vst for 60s-70s orchestra sound, not synth string, not disco type, i will use it for emotional -haunting slow music.

Which one do you recommend ? Thanks.

Like a 60s/70s movie score type of sound? I don't know if there are any dedicated libraries for that kind of thing, but I think anything dry(ish) with smaller sections and lots of expressiveness (deeep vibrato) should work fine once you feed it through some heavy analog coloration to mimic the recording equipment of the era.

I think your only choices in that era would have been synth strings or live strings. You're probably looking for a Moog or Minimoog if you want a strings sound from the 60s - 70s other than a recording of live players.

Yeah, alternatively a string synth like an ARP Solina. A Mellotron wouldn't be a bad choice either.

There's a VSCO 2 Pro snapshot for that, I think I called it 'Golden Age' or something similar (maybe '50's film strings'). There should be one at least for violins, but I think also violas and cellos.

All you really need to make something sound like 50's/60's film is make it either mono or super wide (they were sort of just getting into stereo and would really exaggerate it at first), then EQ it to taste to match a reference source. I used the soundtrack to 'How the West Was Won' as my inspiration when making the VSCO 2 patches and just sort of repeatedly tweaked the sample patch's EQ and stereo image settings until the sound when playing the patch was really similar to what I heard in the soundtrack.

I know I'm pretty late to the party but composer Alex Ball has tried recreating the Jerry Goldsmith track Hyper Sleep of the Alien Soundtrack. It sounds fairly authentic (to me) and he uses mainly modern libraries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8kn3xloIsQ He explains that he mainly uses fake Vinyl fx as well as saturaters that he applies rather on every individual track rather then the master bus.
