When I make a Rompler out of something it is time to kill it! Bye-bye SSO...
Seriously grats on your new Orchestra. I'm downloading it now. I've linked from my free instrument list blog. I also agree with all sediment... err sentiment expressed about how great it is to see these free orchestras available, what do we have now, the venerable SSO is joined by these young upstarts VPO, VSCO2, NBO and Alpine. There has never been a better time to be a poor composer... err take that as you will.

I think it's been a good time to be a poor composer since SSO first came out but it's become even better over the last few months thanks to some new libraries I've used as my sources and the new samples Mattias assembled a few months ago (some of which also made their way into my library).

Its under Entire Orchestra...
http://bigcatlists.blogspot.com/2014/05/...-type.html I need to look over Mattias new stuff. I was holding off because I wasn't sure if he was ready for us to release it yet, then along came VSCO2 and distracted me...

I can't speak for Mattias of course but he gave me permission to use his new stuff in my library so if you ask, I imagine he'd give you permission too.

Version 1.1 is now available for download. Small update.
– adjustments to cymbal crashes in bassdrum-snare-cymbals.sfz – added "all-woodwinds", "all-strings", "all-brass" patches I figure the "all" patches might be useful for quickly sketching out ideas before committing them to individual instruments. http://virtualplaying.com/

I still have plans for more updates. I might add a few more instruments (perhaps in a version 1.2) and I might go back and loop all the samples (that would be version 2.0). Not because I want an unrealistic oboe player, for example, with infinite lung capacity but because some of the samples are too short and with looped samples, the composer can decide how big a musician's lungs are. I already know I can make the samples longer, but if I'm going to do that, I might as well loop them. That's my thinking at the moment but that would be a lot of work. At least as much work as I've already done. I think what I said was that I wanted version 1.0 to last for a while without the need for bug fixes, but that's entirely dependent on a lack of a need for bug fixes. I found a bug, other things that should be adjusted, and also realized that a quick and dirty patch I had created for Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, a simple combination of cello and 1st violin, or something like it, was still needed, by me, for use with my library as a composing tool. That's where the "all-strings" patch and others came from. I found the right .sfz opcodes to make those patches and wanted to share them as soon as I could.

I don't know if anybody around here uses Linux, but I made a project template for Ardour that uses VPO and a small number of Linux-native plugins:
https://github.com/michaelwillis/virtual...r-template It might be possible to port it for use on Mac, or maybe even Windows, but I don't really have a way to test it out. I'm still making a few minor adjustments, but it is usable right now.

Paul,
you commented on my blog a while ago and I never got back to you. I really like your sample library. Like I said, some things such as the trombones sounded a bit synthy to my taste. I probably wasn't very diplomatic in my blog post - I'm German. People here tend to be somewhat blunt. ![]() Some of Matthias' additional samples are pretty cool. I'm adding them to my SSO install little by little. Anyway, it#s good to have MORE free samples to choose from! I was recently thinking that something like a multi-drum sample (Godzilla hits or whatever it's called) would be nice to have for those slightly more epic parts. I guess it could be assembled from very few drum samples with some trickery, but more different (and bigger) drums = better. Thank you for your work. It's been installed and checked out for a while. Michael: I use Linux, but so far simply use Reaper and Windows plugs under Wine. Is Ardour ready for primetime by now? |
