Instaudio is shutting down - Michael Willis - 08-07-2019

Sad news, I loved using Instaudio as a simple way to share recordings:

Yes, it's very sad indeed. Easily one of my favorite websites and such a familiar resource I have trouble NOT clicking on it in my favorites bar every time I want to share a track.

I guess a lot could be said about the reasons Mich decided to shut the project down, many of them familiar to the issues everyone here has faced when making and sharing projects & freeware.

Very sad, indeed. I'll have to use Soundcloud to share ideas now, I guess. I don't suppose anyone knows of any other way? Maybe Drive or even Dropbox?

I used box.com for several years but gradually stopped as I began using Soundcloud and a got proper web hosting plan (I hade some limited free account originally). They're still around so that might be an option, though I seem to remember there being various limitations on file sizes and transfer speeds.

I'm using Dropbox at the moment, as I already have a paid account for business use anyway (long story). It has a decent built-in player which works well enough, although the links are much uglier-

Do you think there's a chance of someone picking up where Instaudio left off?

I've considered developing something similar, but it has a lot of intrinsic difficulties to solve. There are the bandwidth and storage costs, the issues related to people uploading spam or copyright violations, and building a business model that pulls in enough revenue to recoup the costs and ideally make a little bit of profit.

Even a heavyweight like Sound Cloud seems to have trouble keeping their business model together. Bandcamp seems to do ok from what I can tell, and Jamendo has an interesting business model but I don't have any idea how successful it is.

With all that said, I don't think that the initial development would be very hard, particularly for something minimalist like instaudio. At a minimum, it's just allowing people to upload stuff, and then providing a way for people to download or stream the content. Most of the work would be the operational issues, mitigating spam and infringement, and managing the cost/revenue ratio.
