Actually doing something aka VSTis - bigcat1969 - 11-21-2018
I'm again using the hard work of others to align samples, hit export and claim I make instruments. In this and other cases in the Sporadic Advent Calendar of VSTis, using Sam's samples this time for the Psaltery. Up tomorrow will be half a Harpsichord don't tell anyone. Why half? Well I can make one and only one adjustable release group per 'instrument' so the main articulation first and later I'll do the lute.
This does let the user adjust the release which is pretty important on a Harpsichord and makes it look like I'm working twice as hard!

Well this is a lovely bunch of coconuts. I got a new video card and power supply on Cyber Monday and promptly blew up my computer. Fortunately one of my best buddies is a computer whiz and managed to get me back up sort of. Only 1 or SATA ports are working and they wont recognize the old hard drives. So have to find a good deal on a motherboard and see if the hardrives are OK or not. So not doing much instrument making until that happens.
On the positive side I had a little SSD drive that is now my boot and it is nice. Plus the new video card let my play Skyrim in VR on my Oculus Go and it was a pretty amazing experience. The fantasy world looks pretty good in VR, like some thing Mattias would dream up!

Awesome! I mean, not about your computer being blown up, sorry to hear that---But that VR Skyrim experience sounds fun! And SSDs are great. There is one in my main desktop but it's just a caching drive (still awesomely useful, though). I just booted up a new laptop I bought that has one, however, (only an SSD in fact, and it's sadly pretty small) and it's pretty awesome. When the time comes to put together a new desktop I'll be excited to see how an SSD as the main show can improve the whole VO experience. If I'm not mistaken they are basically more than capable in terms of speed, they just had low capacity until recently. Does that sound right? I'm thinking of library size + disk streaming needs, here. But it seems these days there are 1TB internal SSDs that won't break the bank, so maybe that era is here now. It's been ages since I purchased a computer so I'm almost certain the last time I seriously thought about hardware was probably three or four years ago.

Thanks. Yup SSDs are coming down in price which is great for us since you are right they are speedy. The only thing to watch is they do have limited writes, a high number but still limited. I think unlimited or close to it on the reads though.

I was reading about that. I wonder how that would effect making music. Would it amount to considerable wear (beyond "normal use") on an SSD if one were to use it as a primary drive on a music machine? I mean, it's a lot of disk streaming and changing things / editing files, though I'm not savvy enough to know the actual volume of writing to disk that would amount to. As for the laptop I just got I'm not too concerned considering it will primarily be used as a word processor and probably to play old games (though I did stick my DAW on there with VPO and the like for fun
)Sorry it's a bit off topic here, but I'm curious.

Good questions, I'm not really sure. I assume streaming reads would be fine. I'm thinking that a non-ssd internal would be good for swap files, temp files and such.
