OpenSource RPG Maker Soundtrack - Axfinger - 05-14-2017 Hello everyone, This is my first post in these forums. I am an amateur composer who has had a bit of instrument, live sound, and music theory training. I don't have much training in any of these fields, just enough to mess around with, and fill in the rest with my ears, and trial and error. Earlier this year I took on what was for me my first real music project. I've been writing songs here and there since high school as composing is a hobby and passion of mine, but have never taken it beyond that. I happened to stumble upon a project called Open Source RPG Maker and was interested in the project. Turns out the lead programmer was essentially doing everything by himself (with a small amount of community help) and didn't have anything in place for music. I got in contact with him and eventually volunteered myself to write stock music for the software. The music is intended to be in the style of RPG maker 2003, which is to say heavily based in somewhat generic JRPG sounds. I have no previous experience in doing this other than things I have made on my own. I would love to get any and all feedback from anyone here willing to listen. Here is the project: https://soundcloud.com/axfinger/sets/opensource-rpg Ax RE: OpenSource RPG Maker Soundtrack - Mattias Westlund - 05-14-2017 Welcome to the forum Axfinger! Wow, sometimes I think there's a lot of undue modesty going on here when people are posting their tracks. I think what you have there sounds awesome. Admittedly I'm not a huge fan of JRPG music (or JRPG's) but I have to say that you're definitely capturing just the right spirit. That blend of rock elements and orchestral parts for example is very typical for the genre and I can't really object against any of it. It's not my cup of tea, but as far as I can tell it sounds very fitting for the project. My only complaint is that the tracks are too short ![]() RE: OpenSource RPG Maker Soundtrack - Axfinger - 05-14-2017 Thank you for the kind words. To be honest, the reason I am here is because I ran into your music through Wesnoth a few years ago and I have been a fan ever since. I think I have a lot of things I could work on in writing better music, but I appreciate the encouragement. I use a lot of free or very cheap plugins, as you can probably tell, so the sounds are not very consistent in quality. I also have no idea what i'm doing with mixing and mastering, although I have begun to read through your articles on those subjects. I also really struggle with how to approach this project specifically because its supposed to be stock music. One of the best qualities of a game in this genre to me are the use of motif and leitmotif, but as this is stock music for a very generic use in the first place, I almost don't know how appropriate it would be to use a lot of motifs in multiple tracks. As for the length, I would love to make them longer.....until I look at the 30 or so tracks on my list that I haven't made yet ![]() RE: OpenSource RPG Maker Soundtrack - bigcat1969 - 05-15-2017 Awesomeness inc! What are the terms and conditions if I ever make that game I keeping thinking about on non-free rpg maker and wanted to use your music? I listened to the music in your project and it sounds good to me. Seems like what you are doing is working for you. Keep doing it. For the project I'm doing it will all be under a creative commons license, although I haven't decided exactly what yet. You would definitely be able to use it. I'm probably going to have to edit things a bit in the end to make the music loop-able for use in a game. Thanks for all the kind words. Ax |
