RE: SSO 2.0 - kneedeep - 03-28-2018

I've finally tried this. It is very good. I like that it's a drop in replacement. The tremolo violins and staccato violas are very welcome. The marcato patches are going to be useful.

The main thing I'd wish for is more solo violin articulations. And maybe a dampened harp, although I get pretty close with a transient designer plugin. ;-)

Not sure if the choirs are very useful, but I guess it doesn't hurt to have them.

Thanks for your work.

The solo violin I used in SSO is the ldk1609 one from Freesound, and there are a few other articulations available (non-vib sustain, tremolo, spiccato, pizzicato) though I didn't include them since no other solo instruments in SSO had that kind of detail. I think I might have sfz mappings of all articulations somewhere, let me get back to you about that later today.

RE: SSO 2.0 - kneedeep - 03-28-2018

Mattias, that would be great. Maybe I'll have to get into sfz hacking finally.

I mean no disrespect to the other free orchestral libraries and their creators, but to me, there still is something about the combination of sounds and the relative simplicity of SSO that I like. It just sounds good. Some EQ and saturation are needed because the high end is a little dull, some balance is needed (pink noise mixing technique seems to work well), and yeah, some instruments don't have a ton of articulations, but it's still lovely.

Maybe more articulations for the solo violin are justified, since it's perhaps the most famous solo instrument? It could also just thicken whatever the 1st and 2nd violins are doing if it had staccato and tremolo available. It really is a bit bare.

And I've often wished for spiccato not just in the violins, but the celli and basses as well. :-)

RE: SSO 2.0 - Mattias Westlund - 03-28-2018

Here you go. SFZ mappings for arco vib, arco no vib, spiccato and tremolo. Sadly I didn't have the piz samples, but you should be able to get them from freesound and just subsitute the file names in e.g. the spiccato sfz file if you need them.

RE: SSO 2.0 - kneedeep - 03-28-2018

That is *awesome*, Mattias. Thank you so much! I'll complete it with the pizzicatos and upload it.

The spiccato is going to help with at least one of my pieces.

Here is the full solo violin with arco vib/non vib, pizz vib/non vib, spiccato and tremolo articulations.

SSO2_Solo_Violin_full.zip

I rearranged the directory structure to match SSO's. It should be possible to just unzip this into your SSO folder. The sfz files are named according to convention, but uniquely. I also added all the Freesound attributions.

It should be dead simple to add keyswitches, I'll probably do that soon.

Now what other samples do you have left, Mattias?

RE: SSO 2.0 - peastman - 03-28-2018

Awesome!  I'll try to get those merged in soon. Smile

Uploaded, see above.

Do you want to add the keyswitches? Do you think we should add looping? The arco ones are kinda long, I'm not sure it needs to be looped. Shouldn't be hard, since all the work is already done for us.

One more thing, all the sample .wavs in SSO2 are set executable under Linux! That's not good. Can you fix that on your OS? There are also case sensitivity issues in the sfz files where they contain paths, remember Linux is case sensitive and if Reaper ever comes out with a linux version, this may start to matter. or it may not, since sforzando will probably require wine forever... and I don't think wine cares...

... actually, these issues can probably be fixed in git easily.

While I'm at it, do you guys think any more samples from Mattias' page of lost goodies should be added?

Left? Well I dunno, there's a lot of stuff in mattiaswestlund.net/samples but a lot of that is alpha quality and IIRC there's another thread discussing it somewhere on the forum.

RE: SSO 2.0 - peastman - 03-28-2018

Are the "arco" samples the same as the existing SSO sustain samples?  They sound rather different to me, which might just be because the existing ones have reverb baked in and these ones don't.  I makes them sound like two different instruments though.

You mean the ldk1609 violin? No they're not exactly the same, the SSO version has baked reverb like everything else in the library. Plus, of course, that the original violin is chromatically sampled whereas SSO uses only minor 3rd intervals. This probably plays a big part as well.
