Synthetic orchestra experiment - Mattias Westlund - 10-24-2016
I've been playing around with synthesized orchestral sounds lately.
If you feel like trying something a bit different, here's the rendered and SFZ-mapped versions of the patches I have so far. Single velocity, no RR's or anything like that.
I know that these samples are going to seem kind of rubbish at first, but before you dismiss them try them with a bit of reverb and please keep in mind that I'm not trying to make this sound exactly like real instruments. That would be an exercise in futility. What I'm aiming for is an approximation, something that captures timbre and character of the real instruments while still being unabashedly synthetic.
Having said that, some of these sounds ARE bad. I would really appreciate if anyone who decides to have a look at these samples could help me pinpoint exactly what makes some of the patches sound... well, not like what they're supposed to sound like. Thanks

What can be accomplished with synthetic sounds has come a long way. Your demo from here

... is not bad. I have no idea what it would take to make this sound even better beyond layering the synthetic section patches with an actual solo sample if you want it to sound even more real. Sometimes a solo instrument mixed with a section patch can add just that extra hint of definition needed to make a difference.

Thanks Paul. Yeah, you're definitely right about mixing in solo samples, this could probably work very well with these synth patches. Right now I'm focusing on getting them to sound as good as possible without bringing in any samples of real instruments, but we'll see what I end up doing.

Reworked the trumpets and trombones a bit. Maybe still too much filter quack in the 'bones, but it's better.

Actually the violins are pretty good. I made a little Kontakt instrument to mess about with them.
