Anyone interested in BETA testing the new Performance version of Virtual Playing Orchestra? Comment here and I'll send you a link in a private message.

There are 2 versions of the Virtual Playing Orchestra now. I'm interested in testing the usability of the Performance version of the orchestra.

What is the Performance version?

This version of the orchestra uses the mod wheel for volume control and depends on the key velocity to select the articulation / attack of the sound. If you press the keys softly, then you'll get a slow sustain. If you press the keys quickly, you'll get a fast attack. Press keys quickly and release quickly, you'll get staccato.

This enables you to more easily perform the various instruments and mostly eliminates the need for key switches and post recording volume automation.

Articulations like pizzicato and tremolo, are still necessarily selected in the usual way, either by placing these articulations on a separate track or by using key switches.

With one hand on the keyboard and the other constantly but gently moving the MOD wheel, hopefully you can get realistic results like how a real instrument would be played by a live player. For example, I've seen it suggested that a long held violin note should always be rising and following in volume.

Also, try playing slow overlapping notes, interspersed with short choppy notes and everything in between then consider what would be necessary to manually go back and enter those key switches and volume automation with a standard library.
Aww, I'd love to try it, but my digital piano doesn't have a mod wheel. It seems like the primary benefit of this feature would be lost if I were just using my DAW's midi automation to do it.

Does your digital piano have any MIDI sliders? If so, perhaps you could remap cc01 to whatever continuous controller value is managed by a slider.

If not, although the benefit of the MOD wheel is lost, the velocity control of the articulations may still be useful.
You probably need better ears than mine to test it out. It is a interesting concept, but I'm not sure it quite works. I'm assuming that some of it is starting both a long and a short when the modwheel is up? Sometimes it seems to work fine, but other times especially in brass it just seems like 2 instruments start playing slightly off from each other and then resolve into a single instrument.

Yes. With the mod wheel all the way up, and a high key velocity, you should get an accented note, which is like a staccato followed by a sustain.
Oh cool thanks for that. I guess it just wasn't what I was expecting.
I've messed about some more. I'm still getting used to the modwheel for volume in general, but for live performance I can see where it can be very useful. You can sort of start getting the feel for it and do some cool things with swells. I like the concept of short hard strokes triggering the staccato and softer strokes the sustains. The accented notes do sound odd to me, but that might just be my odd ears. There is always a compromise I suppose when you are using the same note / velocity for staccato and sustain in release. Sam has tried to educate me here and I've tried to have short releases for sustains and make up for it with reverb. Here it does feel like the sustain releases are quite sudden, but I don't know if it is possible to have it any other way. Could reverb be used to add some un-suddenness? Sorry to be rambling and for being somewhat negative.

Yes. That's the main purpose. To reduce the need to draw in volume automation but perform the swells while recording. I've seen videos of pro composers using that method and I liked the idea.

Getting the timing of the accented notes was tricky. I sometimes had to fine tune each note individually. I tried to make them match, as much as possible, video examples I've seen. Maybe I'm trying too hard to create different articulations. But, the accents should only occur if you're really trying to cause them.

Are you testing these sample without any reverb? These samples will require reverb. They are intentionally dry so that they can all work together and so I leave it up to the composer to decide the size of the room, just like I leave it up to the composer to place the instruments in the stereo field.

It's honest feedback. I don't find it rambling or negative at all. I appreciate you taking the time to play around with the library and offer feedback.
