Hello there --
I've come across something that's confusing me a decent amount, when it comes to loading in sForzando into Reaper.
Whenever I create a new track with this as the instrument, Reaper always prompts me asking if it wants me to let is setup all the outputs for me automatically (16 stereo channels, 32 outputs in all). However, as I understand it, sForzando only allows for a single sample to be loaded up per instance, so I'm left with the following questions:
- IS there a way to have multiple samples within a single instance of sForzando? Ideally, I'd love to have all the articulations for an instrument collected together into a single instance, if only to make it a bit more organized, and eliminate any unnecessary CPU cycles.
- If, as I believe, sForzando only allows a single sample per instance, then why would I allow Reaper to establish so many unnecessary tracks and connections for that instance? Am I correct in assuming that they are not only not needed, but actually unable to be used at all?
Finally, in a possibly related question, I noticed that the "quick and dirty" orchestra involved using TX16Wx as the sample engine. Is this a sampler that will allow for multiple samples loaded in at once? If so, then it pays for me to learn that tool, and keep sForzando as more of an audition tool for new samples. I want to learn it eventually anyway, since it allows for shaping and balancing across various source material as I get more experience with all of it. Plus, while I LOVE the romplers that bigcat has made for VCSO2 and SSO, I'm sure I'll want to have more control for myself over time.
Thanks in advance for the help!
Hmm, my Reaper doesn't do that.
Sforzando plays a single *patch* (.sfz file) per instance. For instance, the piano from Sonatina is one Sforzando instrument on one track containing many samples for various pitches. So yes, there are multiple samples in one Sforzando instance, but only one patch.
Are you trying to make Sforzando play .wav files or something?
Are you using it on a MIDI channel?
Thanks for responding!
So, I might be loading up a sample directly, rather than a .sfz "patch", as you say. That might be why I'm only getting a single sample per instance, with no mod-wheel funtionality, etc.
Here's what I'd LIKE to do. Ideally, my sample engine would work like Kontakt. Meaning, you would launch one instance, and have all 16 channels available to be assigned to a different articulation and MIDI channel. So let's say we're creating an selection of tracks in our Reaper template that will correspond to the VLN1 section. I would be able to have one instance of the sample engine with each of the 16 channels assigned to a different source articulation (some to VSCO2, some to SSO, some to VPO 2.2, etc.). Then craft the line across all the channels to effect a more realistic playback.
So to tie that scenario to my original question, whenever I create a new track in Reaper with sForzando as the instrument, I get prompted to allow Reaper to create the 16 tracks and assign all 32 output channels, respectively. This at least implies to me that I MIGHT be able to do something like I just described above. But sForzando's documentation clearly states that it's only a single sample per instance. So, therefore it appears that having all those assigned outputs to 16 tracks is a waste of resources. Furthermore, in looking at the feature list of TX16Wx, it appears with that sample engine you CAN do the above.
I just to make sure I'm understanding it correctly, and if not, what I should do to be most efficient with my CPU.

OK, I think I can't help with that. I don't have any Kontakt experience unfortunately. Maybe someone else can answer this.
LinuxSampler will do what you want. Despite the name, there are now Windows and Mac versions. It's a little fiddly to set up, but I have successfully used it to host up to 16 SFZ files per instance.

The short story is that you have to add the plugin to your DAW, and then launch either QSampler or Fantasia which provides you with a way to control the plugin. If you want to run more than one instance, add multiple instances of the plugin to your DAW, and you'll find that the app shows multiple plugin instances that you can choose from.
I've had better lunch with Fantasia. I had trouble with QSampler crashing occasionally, and I think its interface is harder to use.
EDIT: I just noticed that the OSX page has a note at the top saying that it is completely outdated. Blah.
You can apparently get a copy of ARIA, a 16-instrument SFZ sampler, by getting the free DrumMicA library, I think...

Hello there! Thanks for the response, but in browsing through Garritan's site, as well as older lists of stuff (bigcat's free instrument list, for example), I can't find a link for this anywhere.
I've been stuck with work the past couple of days, and haven't been able to play with LinuxSampler at all yet, but will definitely see if that will work this weekend.
Thanks!

DrumMic'A is a free Kontakt Player lib that makes you eligible for a full Kontakt crossgrade.
You can get a free copy of ARIA Player if you just register a Garritan/MakeMusic account though, unless this has changed recently.

Ah, right! Sorry about that, confusing platforms for each other... Thanks for the correction, Mattias!

No worries, just wanted to mention it to minimize confusion. DrumMic'A is a great freebie though!
