To be perfectly honest I find VSCO 2 CE a bit difficult to work with -- not due to any fault of the library itself, but because I haven't done a lot of composing and arranging for smaller ensembles. It kind of makes me feel like everything I know is wrong. However, I was so impressed and inspired by listening to the VSCO 2 contest submissions that I decided to sit down and try to figure out what this library can do (as it clearly isn't suited for my normal orchestral stuff). Here's the result.

I really like it! Great use of dynamics and a melody that sticks. Mind if I add this to the VSCO 2 CE demos soundcloud list?
A versus in which everybody wins! Quite confusing. Great piece of music showing off the CE to great effect.

BTW, has any of you guys noticed that the lower velocity layer of the VSCO 2 CE timpani are almost inaudible? For this one I had to use just the topmost layer and a velocity triggered LPF to simulate dynamics.
I've been meaning to revise the timpani sample selection... I had to go in and add the higher layer. The actual thing has five velocity layers and I think by accident I put the quietest one in (I think I was thinking, "none of these freeware libraries ever have quiet timpani, so I am going to totally show them!!"). The timpani can get super quiet, which is an effect I wanted to use for a track of mine but had to cheat ages ago and have been bitter about since.

Good to hear they're being revised though! I think I spotted some other super-quiet samples as well (you tend to notice quickly in TX16Wx, where you can't just boost samples non-destructively by large amounts like you can in sfz), but what instrument(s) that was escapes me right now.
Some of the percussion is pretty quiet, but that's just being realistic to the real thing.

I have a little list of things to revise for an update- the horn samples need a rework (might even switch out to a different horn entirely), I want to add very basic brass ensemble patches, and retouch the timpani again. I don't know how much I can add to the timpani, but we'll see.
Honestly, the reason I won is solely due to the fact that none of the composers on this forum took part. Wink

Size matters indeed. I too noticed this when I started getting into VSCO 2 CE. Whereas a larger ensemble might be preferable for more modernish songs, the comparatively small VSCO 2 CE seems to work well for music with a classical touch. For songs with a slow, soaring melody over an orchestral groove (or ostinato if you will), a larger library might be preferable. For dense melody over fast-moving harmony and counterpoint, something smaller like VSCO 2 CE may be just the right thing. This is just an example of musical aspects where ensemble size could matter. I'm sure there are other ways it comes into play as well. Smile

The song itself sounds good. I'm getting feelings of belonging together, and perhaps a shared journey. Coupled with the suggestive name and picture, the music certainly helps fuel imagery of a lost age, although I'm not 100% sure if the POV is one of the magnificent ancient beasts or just someone beholding them. Smile

Don't sell yourself short like that, dude. Your piece is brilliant and played a large part in inspiring me to create this one. It literally made me go, "wow, so he's making awesome music with this lib that I just can't seem to get along with? I guess it must be me that's doing something wrong."

Definitely, yeah. I think I have been approaching it from the wrong angle all along.

Thanks. I'm surprised no one has commented on this yet, but both the music, the title and the image is a pretty strong allusion to a certain film featuring dinosaurs that came out in the early nineties. It's basically an homage... or rip-off, I dunno Wink
