Uh... did I say my rack is full and I have no more MIDI ports? Well, turns out I lied. I recently got myself a Roland D-110 and U-110, and I pulled out a couple of rack units I don't use or need to make room for them.
I also have MOTU MIDI Express 128 8 i/o interface on the way, so my current tangled mess of MIDI routing will be a memory before long. In addition to that, I am busy setting up a RMM2 machine. I've realized that using a PIII with Windows 98SE doesn't really add much to the music making process beyond frustration. I have reached a point where performance and reliability are more important to me than nostalgia, so I'm going for a decidedly more modern PC in order to actually get some things done with this setup.
More details soon.
Right, I almost forgot: I couldn't find .reabanks files for a the X5DR, U-110 or CS1x, so I had to create them from scratch. Let me know if you'd like to have them.
That's a fantastic setup! I considered getting a U-110 at some point I think but ended up going with some early EMU stuff out of curiosity.
The MOTU MIDI Express 128 is pretty awesome. I have one I've used to 'power' my setup too and it works great; virtually plug-n-play with most modern computers.
I too do most of my stuff on modern hardware as well. The old computer idea was fun but it turns out I do not have as much space as I thought I did, and basically I'd need a second workstation or something in order to do it justice, so, it's sort of tabled for me for the time being (and I was just using an early Core 2 with XP and occasionally Win98SE!).
I have considered getting a Mini PC for it or something, but I don't know the reality of installing older versions of Windows on newer hardware, especially ones without IDE and such. I think there are a few interesting videos online about getting industrial-style mini PC's and running old software/OSes on them, but it seems somewhat complicated.

The U-110 not that great to be honest. It was revolutionary for its time, but nowadays it's just a primitive rompler among many others. You can get them for real cheap though (paid ~$40 for mine) and it has a few useful sounds. The D-110 is a much cooler unit. It's an actual synth and can do a pretty good D-50 impression as well as some warm, rich analog-type sounds.

That's great to hear! Mine arrived today, will report back later once I have everything hooked up.

Depends on how much older. I'm using XP SP3 for my RMM2 and I had no issues installing it on a Phenom II X4 (which is super-duper OP for XP, you don't really need anything more modern than that) with sata drives and whatnot. Win 98 might have been a different story though.
